RS Lightning Protection

When Should I Install a Lightning Protection System?

Lightning protection isn't required by most building codes, but certain buildings carry enough risk that it's worth installing before a strike, not after.

When Should I Install a Lightning Protection System?

It's Rarely a Legal Requirement — But Sometimes It Should Be a Priority

In most states, lightning protection isn't mandated by code, so the decision to install one comes down to weighing your building's specific risk factors rather than following a mandatory checklist. That makes it easy to put off — until a storm makes the case for you.

Situations Where It Matters Most

A system is worth prioritizing if your building regularly hosts large groups of people, is tall and stands apart from surrounding structures, stores flammable or explosive materials, or sits in an area that sees frequent lightning activity. Any one of these raises both the odds of a strike and the severity of what happens if one occurs — a barn full of hay or equipment, for example, carries very different stakes than an open field.

What Happens Without One

Lightning tends to strike a building's highest point and, without a controlled path to ground, spreads uncontrolled through pipes, cabling, and even reinforced concrete. That current doesn't stay contained to the building it hits — it can travel outward through grounded utility lines and injure people nearby, in addition to the direct fire and structural damage inside.

Getting a Risk Assessment

If you're not sure whether your building needs a system, a lightning risk assessment from a qualified contractor evaluates the likelihood of a strike based on the building's location, height, roof shape, and use, and recommends a system sized to that specific risk rather than a one-size-fits-all installation.

Don't Wait Until After a Strike

It's far more common for a building owner to call after a near miss or an actual strike than before one. Installing a system ahead of time is the only way to actually prevent the damage, rather than repair it after the fact.
