What Is A Lightning Rod?

The rod itself is just the first stop — here's what it actually does, and why the rest of the system matters just as much.

What Is A Lightning Rod?

The Basic Job of a Lightning Rod

A lightning rod — more precisely called an air terminal — is the component of a lightning protection system that intercepts a strike before it hits the building itself. Mounted at the highest points of a roof, it gives lightning a preferred point of contact, then works with the rest of the system to carry that energy safely away from the structure. On its own, a rod does nothing — it only works because it's connected to a conductor and grounding electrode that give the strike somewhere to go.

How It Redirects the Strike

The rod is made from a highly conductive metal, typically copper or aluminum, chosen because it offers far less resistance to electrical current than the building materials around it. Once it intercepts a strike, the energy travels down a connected conductor rather than through the building's structure, wiring, or occupants, and is released into the ground through a grounding electrode. That path is what actually prevents the fire and structural damage lightning can cause — the rod is the entry point, not the whole solution.

How Systems Are Configured

Depending on the building's size and roof design, a system may use a single rod with a conductor run to ground, multiple rods connected by a network of conductors across the roofline, or — on larger or more complex structures — an interconnected mesh of conductors covering the roof to spread coverage across a wider area. The right configuration depends on the building's height, shape, and how exposed it is to strikes.

Placement and Material

Air terminals are placed on every high point of a structure — ridgelines, chimneys, dormers, even rooftop equipment — since lightning tends to strike the tallest available point. Getting placement right takes an assessment of the whole roof, not just the peak.
